Upcoming Trainings (You Shouldn't Miss)
Youth Development 101
The first of two comprehensive trainings offered by CNYD this year, this 2-day training will lead youth practitioners through the foundations of the youth development framework for practice. The perfect training for new youth agency staff members, we will lead participants through a process on how to turn research-based theory into effective practice with young people.
This training will engage the Youth Development Guide, developed by CNYD as an easy-t0-use tool for creating challenging and engaging learning environments during out of school time. It provides specific and practical advice on strengthening individual staff practices and organizational policies in after school programs to support learning and young people's healthy development. Each chapter of the Guide offers descriptions of core youth development practices-what it looks and sounds like, provides hands on applications on how to encourage and deepen practice, and offers exercises and tools to use with staff members on site.
Youth Development 101 is a pre-requisite for any of the Making it Happen online courses (see information below).

This fall, CNYD offers opportunities for Bay Area youth practitioners, educators, and teaching artists to explore the connections between the arts, learning, and youth development both in and after school settings. These events continue the work we have done in the past in our social training series, Youth Development and the Arts, as well as successful events last year - A Speakers Forum featuring the nationally-acclaimed Eric Booth, an arts- based learning workshop presented by Sabrina Klein of Julia Morgan Center for the Arts and a Media Arts panel of innovative local practitioners.

Arts& Learning: Visual Thinking Strategies with Philip Yenawine
Philip Yenawine, internationally renowned museum educator and co-founder of Visual Understanding in Education (VUE) will talk to Bay Area educators, teaching artists, and youth practitioners about his innovative curriculum, Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS).
During VTS lessons, students are asked to articulate their views, find evidence in images to support their claims, listen to and consider the viewpoints of their peers, and debate possible interpretations. This inquiry-based, student-centered methodology will invigorate any youth program and bring excitement and discourse into art education. The VTS curriculum is designed for elementary aged students, but can be used for all ages!
