CNYD has more than a decade's worth of experience in providing stimulating and dynamic professional development workshops for youth workers. Our offerings cover a wide range of topics designed to strengthen individual and agency effectiveness. Every CNYD workshop offers:

  • a seasoned staff of youth development specialists and trainers, known for their engaging training style
  • a dynamic learning community where knowledge and skills are strengthened
  • links between real-world experience and cutting-edge research in the field with practical applications to working with youth

To ensure participants have the necessary support to apply workshop learning in their program, CNYD staff are available to provide coaching to interested agencies. CNYD staff also design and conduct customized workshops to meet specialized organizational needs on request.

Introduction to Youth Development (2 day training)

The perfect training for new staff members! A high-energy 2-day course that provides youth programming staff with an overview of research-based youth development principles and practices. Its purpose is to prepare participants to adopt and begin implementing youth development strategies to support young people's health development - based on CNYD's Youth Development Guide.

Making it Happen: Youth Participation

CNYD is proud to announce our latest innovative training series that incorporates online learning, in the room training, and individualized on the job coaching support!

Making it Happen : Youth Participation is designed to lead the direct youth service practitioner through an in-depth exploration into the practice of youth participation as defined by the youth development framework for practice. By the end of the training, youth practitioners will have the skills to practically apply the concepts of youth leadership, decision-making, and belonging to their work in their programs.

This course consists of 25 hours of valuable and engaging work in a variety of learning styles:

  • 10 hours of online learning activities that define key concepts, present case studies, and facilitate on-going virtual discussions
  • 10 hours of in the room training that provide opportunities for practice and group process
  • 5 hours of individualized on-the-job coaching that allow participants to implement an action plan to make real change in their programs*

Introduction to Youth Development is a pre-requisite for any of the Making it Happen online courses. Participants of this course must have a computer with reliable access to the world wide web.

The process of the course is as follows:

  • 1-hour conference call
  • Self-Study 1 (self-paced work at the computer)
  • Training Day 1 (in the room group work)
  • Self-Study 2
  • Training Day 2
  • The course culminates in on-the-job coaching to complete the action plan.

Making it Happen: Relationship Building

CNYD is proud to announce our latest innovative training series that incorporates online learning, in the room training, and individualized on the job coaching support!

Making it Happen : Relationship Building is designed to lead the direct youth service practitioner through an in-depth exploration into the practice of relationship building as defined by the youth development framework for practice. By the end of the training, youth practitioners will discover the impact of the adult role on youth as you assess the strength of relationship building in your program, and communication skills and strategies to support positive group dynamics.

This course consists of 25 hours of valuable and engaging work in a variety of learning styles:

  • 10 hours of online learning activities that define key concepts, present case studies, and facilitate on-going virtual discussions
  • 10 hours of in the room training that provide opportunities for practice and group process
  • 5 hours of individualized on-the-job coaching that allow participants to implement an action plan to make real change in their programs*

Making it Happen: Skill Building

CNYD is proud to announce our latest innovative training series that incorporates online learning, in the room training, and individualized on the job coaching support!

Making it Happen : Skill Building is designed to lead the direct youth service practitioner through an in-depth exploration into the practice of Skill Building as defined by the youth development framework for practice. Skill Building is designed to support youth workers in creating powerful opportunities for youth to develop skills. Participants will have opportunities to learn new concepts, reflect on their own practice, gain skills and practical strategies, and plan for program improvements.

This course consists of 25 hours of valuable and engaging work in a variety of learning styles:

  • 10 hours of online learning activities that define key concepts, present case studies, and facilitate on-going virtual discussions
  • 10 hours of in the room training that provide opportunities for practice and group process
  • 5 hours of individualized on-the-job coaching that allow participants to implement an action plan to make real change in their programs*

Diversity, Equity, and Youth Development

This 2-day course is an opportunity fo youth serving agencies and after school programs to expand their efforts to do youth development in a way that challenges inequities and builds understanding and respect for young people's diverse backgrounds and experiences. Through a variety of experiential activities, CNYD will support you in better understanding who the youth are in your program and community and in reflecting on how well you serve them.

Supporting Youth Development in Your Program: For Program Leaders and Site Directors

This is training is designed to support mid-level managers in strengthening youth development in their programs through skillful implementation of their roles as leader, coach, and/or manager. Participants will have opportunities to focus on staff practice, program implementation, and organizational advocacy.

The Circle is Open: Diversity & Equity in Youth Programs

This Special Training Series is an opportunity for Bay Area youth serving agencies and after school programs to expand their efforts to do youth development  in a way that challenges inequities and builds understanding and respect for young people’s diverse backgrounds and experiences.  Through a variety of experiential activities over five training sessions, CNYD and California Tomorrow will support you in better understanding who the youth are in your program and community and in reflecting on how well you serve them. Together, we will discuss different dimensions of diversity including ethnicity, culture, gender, language and sexual orientation. We will explore ways to create an emotionally safe, nurturing, inclusive and engaging environment in your program and organization. And we will look at strategies for developing young people’s social awareness and involvement in their communities.   The Circle is Open will offer resources from CNYD’s Youth Development Framework for Practice and California Tomorrow’s national research and tools on after school equity and diversity. It will also create opportunities for participants to examine their own practices, learn from each other, and plan for moving forward.
 
In addition to the five training sessions, we will offer an online component, as well as five hours of follow-up coaching to help agencies apply concepts and lessons learned in the Special Training Series.
